Most parents will tell you that the pre-cursor to management wasn’t a team lead role. It was having kids. The daily grind of raising humans; unspoken needs, reading behaviour, constantly trying to strike the balance of guiding and giving space.

With one very BIG fundamental difference. Your kids, will do what you do, but (not often) do what you say. As a parent, you need to be careful; you’re modelling.

As an employer, your staff are unlikely to do this. They will do what THEY think is right to fulfil the brief, i.e. they will do it in their own way. And this is great! You WANT motivated people doing it their own way… their lights will be lit by their own brilliant ideas.

Just make sure that you have the RIGHT PEOPLE FIRST, driving the right values, and the outcomes will magically be the ones you’re looking for. This is the magic of people alignment.
